Wimawi is the name of a Kanak mourner’s mask from the Hoot ma Whaap region, belonging to the Whaap clan. After being sold and taken to an unknown land, it goes through various pairs of hands before being sold at auction. Currently exhibited at the Quai Branly Museum, this spirit from the land of the dead tells its story : the story of the Kanak Country.
