This third film of a trilogy, ‘Position among the stars’ transports us into the working-class suburbs of Jakarta. For twelve years, Leonard Retel Helmrich followed a Javanese family. Through the eyes of Rumidjah, the grandmother, he paints a portrait of a fast-changing Indonesian society.
In the realities of this world, where corruption rules, in a country with a large Muslim majority and where maintaining Christian tradition is all the more complicated, Rumidjah has to cope with the demands of Tari, his granddaughter, who is under the influence of the Western model. She hopes one day to escape from the grinding poverty in which her family has been trapped for generations.
