In the Fifties, the United States carried out sixty-seven atmospheric nuclear tests within the Marshall Islands, exposing populations to significant radioactive fall-out which caused burns, cancers and birth defects... Islanders from Rongelap and Bikini had to leave their devastated islands but some of them were relocated on highly contaminated land.
